Yogini
YOGINI (female term for person who practices yoga)
When I was first ill, I would have never believed that Yoga could change or even SAVE my life. I have always practiced Yoga (my aunt and cousin teach Bikrham in San Francisco), but I never relied on it as a way of life until it became my way of life. Kind of like driving a car, you can’t over analyze … you just have to DO IT.
So how to navigate YOGA LAND. First of all, there are so many different types of yoga (as there are types of dance). You will find the styles that best work with your body, fitness level, diet, and schedule. Vinyassa & T.R.E. (Trauma Releasing Excercise) has become my favorite and are two types I currently train (stay tuned to future blog posts).
In my mind, Vinyassa = cardio (good for runners, swimmers, people that crave the feeling of getting their heart rate up), Power Yoga = more intense version of Vinyassa, Restorative = restful, lots of stretching, longer length of time in each pose, grounding , Bikrham = hot room (if you really want to sweat), Meditation = if you are good at sitting still (or need to learn how to).
Attire to wear? Check out Lululemon, Element-V.com, or even your running clothes. Anything comfortable that allows you to stretch, twist, and bend in every position imaginable.
Don’t be afraid. We’re not all granola loving non-hair washing, tom shoes wearing (even though I adore Toms) hippies. There is a style or ”vibe” for everyone. From dub-step house blasting, to reggae and new age infused, slow breathing and deep meditation, to trendy yogi studios (yogasource, yogaworks) and free lance exhibitionists, music festival yoga retreats to intense teacher trainings. There is something for everyone.
As always, feel free to ask me any questions (ASK link). I train as well :)
